+0000 Marina Merino https://marinafriedrich.com/ARTS-AND-SCIENCE Arts and Science Project: Energy Exchange Between Ocean and Atmosphere As part of an Arts and Science project, I created two paintings and a graphic illustration in collaboration with the Collaborative Research Center TRR 181. The project explores the exchange and transfer of energy between the ocean and atmosphere. Each research team contributed information, graphics, and images, which I integrated into a single composition. Upon closer inspection, each team can recognize its contributions within the artwork. The piece symbolizes collaboration and the bigger picture—highlighting the collective effort behind the research. Her research explores the processes occurring in the thin uppermost layer of the ocean—known as the ocean surface layer—and its crucial role in the exchange between the ocean and the atmosphere.To translate this into a visual composition, I combined three of Mariana Lage’s scientific graphics, integrating a horizon line and sky to evoke an abstract representation of an ocean view. The stripes extending from the sky and continuing through different layers symbolize movement, mixing, and exchange. This piece was a special experience—not only because of the location, but also because I mixed some of the colors myself using natural pigments. The shapes I painted are free-flowing and floral—intuitive forms inspired by nature and the atmosphere of the place.
